Basic areas of application of these devices are hail defence and causing of rainfall in drier areas, as well as for research and operative projects of artificial influence on the weather. UDV is used in combination with suitable, usually light, airplanes. Using the devices, and guided by the data received from department of meteorology, the airplane reaches the treatment area. The combustion products of the solution of silver iodide in acetone that the device sprays into the treatment area serve as crystallization cores of undercooled water in the clouds. That increases the natural process of rainfall forming in the clouds, which, in case of hail defence, decreases their final size, due to increased amount of particles formed, to the average level of below 6 mm in diameter. Grains of such a small size are not capable of making damage when falling to the ground.

Similar systems for artificial influencing on the weather by using airplanes have been in use for several decades in the USA, and in the last 20 or so years in Austria and Germany. Greece and some other countries also perform their hail defence by using UDV aircraft devices.

However, the existing devices used so far have shown significant functional flaws during operation, which reflected in a negative manner to their complete efficiency and therefore to their spreading worldwide. By professional and systematic access to the mentioned flaws and their removal, Kronos d.o.o. has, after five years of investment in the development of new UDV devices based on their own innovative solutions, created a prototype of the device with significantly better performance.

GS-001 is a working title of the prototype of the UDV device developed by Kronos company. Since 2005, the device has successfully been used in the area of Bavaria in Germany, and on the area of Osijek-Baranja County (a pilot project).
